Prednisone belongs to the drug class of corticosteroids and works by mimicking the effects of the steroid hormones that is naturally produced by the body and decreasing an individual’s immune response to different diseases in order to reduce symptoms such as inflammation or swelling and other allergic-type reactions. Prednisone is commonly used to treat various diseases such as arthritis, allergic reactions and certain conditions that affect the skin, lungs and blood. It is also sometimes used to treat symptoms associated with certain types of cancer. Prednisone is usually formulated as a tablet or solution for oral administration or as a cream for topical application. Also, Prednisone can be given via inhalation or intranasal spray and as injection.
When taken by mouth, Prednisone is usually given with food or milk in order to avoid stomach upset which is a common side effect. It should only be taken exactly as directed by the doctor as the use of the medication is associated with various Prednisone side effects. Some of the common Prednisone side effects include headache, dizziness, difficulty or trouble sleeping, acne, heartburn, increased hair growth, irregular menstrual periods, increased sweating and decreased sexual desire. It is important to go to the doctor if any of these symptoms become severe or do not go away. Prednisone may also cause retarded growth and development in children and increased risk of osteoporosis in adults.

Some side effects may be serious and the doctor should be informed immediately. These symptoms may include, irregular heartbeat, vision problems, change in mental status (may be evidenced by confusion or depression), severe abdominal pain, sore throat, fever or other signs of infection, vomiting, or difficulty in breathing. Since Prednisone may decrease the body’s ability to fight infection due to its immunosuppressant activity, caution should be taken to avoid getting an infection by keeping away from people with infection such as chicken pox or measles.
Prednisone is taken as a long-term medication to control symptoms of certain conditions. It is important to continue taking Prednisone even if the patient feels well. It is not advised to suddenly stop taking the medication as the body may not have enough levels of steroid hormones to function normally. Symptoms such as weakness and fatigue, mouth sores, weight loss and slowed movements are also some of the Prednisone side effects that may be experienced when the medication is abruptly stopped. The doctor should be informed if any of these symptoms are experienced when taking decreased doses of Prednisone or after stopping the medication.
Prednisone is also known to interact with several other medications and the doctor or pharmacist should be informed of any other drugs that are being taken such as anticoagulants, antifungals, certain antibiotics, diuretics, hormonal contraceptives, antidiabetics and some others. Dose adjustments may be necessary to control for any side effects that may result from the drug interaction.
Most people who take Predisone do not experience serious side effects. It is important to take the medication exactly as prescribed by the doctor and immediately call the doctor for any concerns on Prednisone side effects or if any of the symptoms become severe in order to have the problem addressed accordingly.
